How to Be Your Own Fairy Godmother (and get your own fucking dress and glass slippers)

You might be cleaning floors, but you aren’t Cinderella. And you don’t have a fairy godmother.

How to Be Your Own Fairy Godmother (and get your own fucking dress and glass slippers)

  1. Lose sleep to get what you want. If you don’t have what you want right now, you don’t have the luxury of 8 or 10 hours of sleep when 6 will do and you definitely don’t get vacation days. No reality tv either which is “unreality” anyway.
  2. Control your thoughts 24/7. Your reasons for not doing what you want to do, being who you want to be and having what you want to have fall into one (or both) of two worthless categories: (1) fear- worthless unless you are being chased by a bear and need to run really fast for a short burst, (2) doubt-which in the history of human behavior, is the only thing more worthless than fear. What did doubt ever solve or create except procrastination.
  3. Keep company with people who are doing what you want to do or have already done it. In fact, spend a lot of time with them whether online or in person. You will learn from them, be inspired by them and it will help you keep going when you’re stuck, tired, frustrated and overwhelmed.
  4. Know your role models. Whether it’s someone famous like Oprah, Bill Gates or the president or someone you know, figure out how they got where you want to be. Read their story. Watch their videos and Ted Talks. Talk to them if possible.

Here’s what I learned from my 20 year old daughter- get what you want. Period. She manifested the shit out of her dream, which was to travel and work abroad. She started in Thailand volunteering with elephants and is now living and working in Australia. The first time she taught me about getting what I really want, she was 12 and it was as simple as her going into McDonald’s to get what I really ordered at the drive-thru window and not settling for what they gave me. She not only came out with my correct order but scored an ice cream cone as well.

I know both kinds of people. Those living in fear, procrastination, and complacency which will one day be regret and several who are living life on their terms full of adventure, change and exhilaration that will turn into fond memories.

If you had to give yourself a hashtag today, what would it be? Are you swimming with elephants or on the path to regret?
