As humans, we focus on what we do not want because that’s, most often, what we consciously know best. It’s what’s most salient in your mind. What you don’t want might even be all around you. You are less certain, or completely in the dark, about what you do want and therefore, unable to focus on that. No other animals, besides humans with our brilliant minds, gets trapped in this life-altering tangle.
You spend no time seeking what you do want because you don’t believe it’s possible for you to have it or that you’re worthy of having it. Your head is filled with all the reasons you can’t or won’t get it. If you can’t see “how” you can achieve something you want, you get bogged down in that.
You do not yet understand that you can be, do and have anything. You see the world as probability (with an emphasis on the “unlikelihood”) rather than as possibility.
However, focusing on what you don’t want is also disappointing, with absolute certainty.
Recently, I saw the message “Thoughts are things” on a sign at the garden center on my usual path to the bank. That garden center had never posted messages like that on its sign. But it was there nonetheless on this day, at the precise moment I was focused on a stressful situation and the possibility of what could go wrong. It was the reminder I needed, at the right time, to focus only on what I want to happen, without regard for anything else. Do not focus on what might happen, what could go wrong or what you don’t want. Don’t solve problems you do not currently have. Don’t anticipate trouble. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT. If other thoughts creep in, send them away and visualize what you do want and feel how happy you will be when you get it.
If your foot hurts, you focus on the pain and the injury, not on the feeling of a healthy foot. It’s difficult to focus on the foot being completely well when it isn’t, but that is what you must do. It’s the same with money. If you focus on how much or how little you have right now, rather than how much money you want to have each day, you will get more of what you have and not what you want. Thoughts are things.
Your thoughts matter so much more than your actions. Even if you don’t know the “how”, focus on what you want. When you only give energy and emotion to that, it appears and with surprising speed. The how begins to reveal itself when you focus on what you want. Opportunities appear, doors open, messages show up everywhere- even in places they don’t normally appear- to guide you. I’m not reciting rhetoric…this is how I live. It works. It’s a practice, like yoga, running or meditation. It takes work and determination to be committed to it long enough to get results. You get better at it with time and practice. The more you work on controlling your thoughts and only holding thoughts about what you want and how you want to feel, the more easily, effortlessly and automatically you do so. As with everything else, you will see the results if you consistently do the work. That’s how it works.
What you think matters so much more than what you do.
You do not need to know the “how” of anything before you begin. You only must know how you want to feel. Even if you start by focusing on feeling more joy, the way will begin to reveal itself.
Change your mind, change your life. There is no better work you can do for yourself and those around you.
You are worth it.
Hugs and happiness,
Lisa Z.
